Everlasting What if your destiny lay on the other side of deathThe annual Culling ceremony is a day every coming of age novice looks forward to within the Primeval Coven It’s the start to being initiated into the Night Watchmen humankind’s protectors and it’s the long awaited day when novices discover if they’re a Hunter or a Witch But this day is not a happy one for Faye Middleton Not when she’s known her whole life that she’s a Defect and is about to face banishment in front of her fellow novices She’s forced to attend the Culling with little hope for her future but what she discovers about herself is far worse than she could’ve imagined And far dangerous Thrown into training and separated from her friends Faye must learn to adjust She struggles to find her place within the Coven and with Jaxen Gramm the darkly handsome and extremely unnerving man assigned to watch and protect her Emotions run high and when she discovers a deadly secret about him her struggles deepen As corruption within the Coven begins to unravel Faye pieces together her role in saving the future of her people and within Jaxen’s lifebut will the truth save her or be her undoing I received this copy of Everlasting from Candace Knoebel in exchange for a honest review 'I have to say Middleton I didn't think you'd have it in you He's looking me over and I know what he meant was that I don't look the part I'm too frail Too smallMaybe you shouldn't think then I retort' Kick ass action magic and romance combine to form an addictive tale that will have readers on the edge of their seatsAlthough life has its inconsistencies every coming of age novice within the Primeval Coven knows one factor will remain constant the annual Culling ceremony The day when they're revealed to be either a Hunter or a WitchThe day when their purpose in life and their place within the Coven are securedBut for Faye Middleton no other factor in her life could be uncertainWhilst other novices prepare for their future as either a Hunter or a Witch Faye prepares for a life as a Defect It's a fact she's had to deal with her whole life one that ultimately means banishment and a life amongst humans away from those she loves And as the Culling looms closer Faye's fear becomes stronger Yet even though her clairvoyant mother saw her future a long time ago Faye can't help but cling to a tiny sliver of hope Destinies aren't set in stone there has to be a way to change her own destiny There just has to beAll she needs is a miracleGoing from a Defect to an Everlasting could be considered an upgrade OrnotWhen the Culling doesn't go to plan ie stuff explodes plus screaming and general panic ensues Faye is faced with the startling revelation that she isn't a Defect Far from it She's an Everlasting neither Witch nor Hunter but a mixture of both And although being an Everlasting may come with a lot of perks and power it also comes with a great amount of danger danger not only for her but for the people around her All sides need her All sides want her And all sides fear what she will becomeFaye is pushed to her limits as she's trained to be both a Hunter and a Witch Isolated from the others she finds solace in the company of trainer and protector Jaxen a handsome guy with a deadly secret dictating his actions and his heart But Jaxen's not the only one keeping secrets The Coven isn't as honourable as it would like its people to believe and Faye finds herself stuck in its web trapped between her duty and what is right With Faye being the most sought after chess piece on the board the uestion remains is she the one fighting Or is someone else calling the shotsIs she a playeror a pawnBe prepared for a heroine who isn't afraid to face up to her own flawsUnlike many female protagonists Faye Middleton acknowledges her shortcomings and the shortcoming of most YANA females and she strives to be her own woman and make things right One of the most potent scenes is the one where she realises that she shouldn't try to be someone else to get a guy's attention 'You're being absurd I tell myself shaking my head But even with admitting this I still manage to brush my hair out and braid it from one side of my head to the other giving it some form of cutenessI could be a stereotype I could fall into the trap of trying too hard I could be someone other than myself for himAnd I don't like itI undo my braid and run my fingers through my hair straightening it back out I want to look as plain as possible I need to' This is an important message a message that tells its female audience that the person the guy should get to knowdatefall in love with should be you the natural you The you without the constant primping The you whose voice doesn't go several octaves higher when you talk to himIt doesn't condemn looking good far from it But what it does reinforce is that it's very very easy to be a stereotype and to hide behind that facade But it takes strength to be yourself to allow someone to see the real youBe prepared for a heroine who isn't afraid to talk back or blurt stuff outA cross between Rose from Vampire Academy and Anna from Frozen Faye is a complex character who lets slip trivia when she's nervousand on the can other hand call someone out on their behaviour with all the fierceness of a mama bear And it's refreshing to also meet a guy character who gets nervous around girls like a normal guy wouldJaxen is hot there's no denying it He can kick ass like a pro But he still gets nervous when he's faced with a situation involvingi Talkingii A pretty girlAnd it's not the kind of nervous where you stutterfreak outsweat But it's the sweet kind of nervous a nervousness they both share as they start to discover and explore the bond that grows stronger between them with each day And it's nice that Faye isn't afraid to stick up for herself or tell Jaxen he's being stupid Right here is the kind of female protagonist we need ofSo if you like pointy weapons sizzling kisses and plenty of angry demons pick up Everlasting today I was in the middle of beta reading for Sonya Loveday when she poked me and asked if I would be interested in beta reading Candace’s new book; Everlasting I knew Candace from her other series; Born in Flames Trilogy so I immediately jumped at the chance and did a happy dance at the same time – it’s the internet people Who would noticeAnyways I started reading and after only a few pages in I knew that Everlasting was going to be great I fell for the different characters I was tossed inside a world far from my own and truly didn’t want to leave it Let’s start with some of the characters shall weFaye Middleton is a girl who knew all her life she wouldn’t be a part of the Coven Her own mother told her as a child that she had seen in a vision that Faye was going to be a Defect So this is what Faye has believed her entire life She applies for colleges because the rules in the Coven are strict; you’re a Defect you’re out Not just you can’t be a part of the cool kids click but abandoned out No contact not even with your loved onesEven better; the Culling Ceremony isn’t just to define your magic; Witch or Hunter but to find your soulmate; your Affinity partner I’m straying from the subject; Faye turned from being timid little girl to being a kick ass woman who fights for what she believes in and will do anything to protect her friends and family When realizing she isn’t a Defect but something uniue Faye has to figure out not only what she is but who she is as well Jaxen Gramm is well he’s a Hunter he’s a guy and he’s complicated aren’t they alwaysHis task is to protect and train Faith alongside with his witch and his brother and his witch Jaxen has a secret actually all the Gramm’s men have but each of them chose to act on it in their own way He is trying to be sooo though not letting anything or anyone in and yet there are cracks There’s also Maddock Gavin Jezibel and Cassie Each play a vital part in Everlasting some annoying than others Sorry but if I tell too much about them I will spoil some of the bookEverlasting had me in stiches from laughter had me in anger to the point where I wanted to reach into the book and slap some of the characters The building tension between Jaxen and Faye is it’s delicious Don’t get me wrong; it’s frustrating beyond explanation but it was soooo good So close every time and yet never ever getting there I think I scolded Candace once or twice for this SmilesEverlasting was everything I hoped for and then some Adventure magic badgood supernatural creatures love frustration dark secrets haunting dreams and hope for the future Then add twists and turns in the plot that leaves you heartbroken and scattered trying to pick up the pieces Candace has created a wonderful and amazing new world Everlasting being the first book in the Night Watchmen Series and I am certainly looking forward to exploring of this world especially since I still have unanswered uestions from reading Everlasting Great work Candace Now go back to writing I want to know what happens 3 So usually when I do reviews I like to give you a little recap of the book but this time I've decided to give you the Top Ten reasons I loved this book and you will too1 Jaxen drool Swoon sigh Yea he deserves all that and way way 2 Faye The main character in which this story is about At first combination Trust me K5 The characters Seriously all the characters in Everlasting are amazing and will completely blow you away And I mean every character You can tell that Candace Knoebel takes the time to thoroughly develop each and every one of her characters taking great care in building them into people that we can all love or hate Or love to hate6 The story I love this story No it is not a completely original idea it has elements from multiple great books But it's how Candace Knoebel takes those elements and twists them and warps them that makes this story seem original She is what breathes life into it and it works It's beautiful I loved this story so much I didn't want to put it down seriously I had to pry the kindle out of my hands at 130 in the morning because I had to be awake in less than 4 hours 7 Pacing This sort of goes along with #6 the pacing of this story is perfect From the minute you start this book things just flow The story is constantly moving forward and has a perfect mix of action and story This is just one of the reasons I couldn't put this book down8 Jaxen yes he deserves to be on this list twice Hell you are lucky this entire list isn't just Jaxen Read this book and you will understand my fixation 9 Did I mention that Jaxen has an eually awesome brother named Gavin I didn't Well shame on me Yes there are two freaking amazing guys in this book Ok so there are than two but these are the two that really countAnd10 Balance you thought I was going to say Jaxen again didn't you Yea I was Everlasting has perfect balance With all the action going on in this story Candace Knoebel does an amazing job of keeping the story balanced There is never too much of one thing This book is the perfect harmony of action magic humor mystery and of course
